How Do You Know If A Salt Lamp Is Authentic?

We are often asked how to tell if a salt lamp is authentic and what to look for when buying them. This is a great question! While it's absolutely fine to use novelty salt lamps if you like the look of them, it is important to know the difference if you are hoping for the air cleansing benefits of an authentic salt lamp.

Salt lamps slowly work to cleanse the air.
How?

Salt is hygroscopic, which means that it attracts and absorbs moisture from the air. Salt lamps attract water molecules from the surrounding environment and then absorb those molecules (as well as the other particles that the water molecules are carrying) and then brings them into the salt crystal. As the lamp warms, the water evaporates back into the air but the trapped dust, pollen, smoke, etc. particles remain trapped in the salt!

There are a number of ways to tell if a salt lamp is authentic.

One way to tell if a salt lamp is real is the cost. If a salt lamp is really cheap, it is probably a "too good to be true" type of situation. Real salt lamps will generally cost around $4.00 per pound or more at retail prices. With the cost of salt mining and shipping heavy salt lamps to the USA, it is a red flag if you see a salt lamp that is cheap and/or offers free shipping online.

The other way to tell based on cost is if all colors of Himalayan salt lamps cost the same amount at a specific retail location. Himalayan salt can be white, gray, or pink. The pink is the most common of all the Himalayan salt colors and the gray and white are rarer compared to the pink salt. This is why the authentic gray and white salt lamps usually cost more than the pink ones. Salt lamps are also able to be carved into shapes such as pyramids, globes, or cubes and the shaped lamps can cost a bit more than the natural cut salt lamps.

Salt lamps are a natural product so they will all look at least a little bit different. The shape and shades of colors will vary and some will even have a combination of colors. If you see salt lamps in a store that all look exactly the same or all have exactly the same shape, that is a pretty good giveaway that they are not authentic.

If a salt lamp handles moisture or high humidity very well with no change it is another good sign that it might be fake. Since salt lamps attract moisture, they will usually appear to "cry" or "sweat" a bit if there is a lot of moisture in the air. Turning it on will warm the salt crystal and dry it out.

Real salt lamps are somewhat fragile and can chip, crack, or shed salt. If a salt lamp can handle being bumped or dropped with no sign of any damage at all, it's another sign that it might not be real. Acrylic salt lamps will be more durable but they will not offer the same health benefits.

Our advice is to use your best judgment when purchasing your salt lamps or purchase them from a place that you can trust to have authentic products.
